Craft Porn

Last week, I promised to try a new recipe or craft from Pinterest every week. I have decided to post these attempts on tiddy.com for your inspiration/amusement.

Are you on Pinterest? I am a full-fledged addict. It is porn for crafters. Each night before I go to sleep, I snuggle in bed with my iPad and pin inspirational quotes and low-fat recipes. The effort pretty much ends there as I never follow up and complete the projects.

One of my favorite blogs is Pinstrosity, where readers send in photos of popular pins they tried at home. The blog posts the original pin and the attempt. Here is an example:

Pinterest makes things seem so easy. Five minutes on the site and you’re a regular Martha Stewart. And the ideas are so simple, yet life changing. For example, did you know you could wrap potatoes in tin foil in the morning, put them in a crock pot all day and have baked potatoes for dinner? Pinterest taught me that. Have you ever thought about substituting guacamole for mayonnaise for a healthier chicken salad? What if I told you that you could make the same rustic dining room table in the Pottery Barn catalog with 30 bucks worth of materials from Home Depot?

Some of the ideas are totally lame (Valentine’s Day cannolis, homemade wasp traps) but mostly awesome, which brings me to this week’s Pinterest attempt.

When I saw this pin, I knew it was going to be a winner. What an amazing birthday gift! Instead of merely purchasing a bottle of booze for a friend, you take it one step further and make it FANCY! Although the picture does not do it justice, it really turned out great! The green bottle really sets off all of the colors. Although it is very obvious, I want to point out that the photo on the left is the pin and my bottle is on the right.

Some helpful hints: I bought a shitload of gems at Oriental Trading Company online for about five bucks. When I say shitload, I mean 5,000. Guess what you’re getting for your birthday?

I used my hot glue gun which was extremely messy. Next time, I am going to try some clear craft glue.

You should also outline the labels with gems first and then work out from there. Otherwise, the lines won’t be as precise. I also made this mistake.

If you decide to make this, send me a pic and I will post. You know I’m going to bedazzle a bottle of champagne next!  Also, if there is a pin you want me to attempt, send it to me for my next Pinterest post!  If I don't receive any suggestions, I will be making my own gummy bears using sugar-free Jello next week.  I am dead serious.

I use my leftover Patron bottles on the kitchen counter for cooking liquids...olive oil, red wine vinegar, soy sauce, etc. Just peel the labels off and run them through the dishwasher. I also always have one filled with homemade salad dressing in the fridge...and next to the sink for mouthwash and makeup remover. They are really pretty bottles and expensive! However, I never thought to bedazzle them...hum....
